The Union County freeholder board as well as the Hillside municipal and Board of Education officials joined for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open a new 1.1-mile walking path at Conant Park in Hillside on June 25.
The new walking path came about out of a public interest request. The township heard their community’s wishes and acted on it. Conant Park is one of 36 Union County parks that encompass 6,200 acres and features soccer fields, a softball field, a basketball court, fitness trail, playground, restrooms, parking, picnic tables, grills, WiFi and more.
Conant Park’s new walkway is part of an overall refurbishment plan for the park, costing approximately $500,000 in all.
According to Union County Department of Parks and Recreation Director Ron Zuber, “The $500,000 in improvements went for an outdoor fitness gym, new bleachers for the athletic fields, new team benches, foul poles and a water fountain.”
“Union County parks have been one of the few places where county residents can go during the COVID-19 outbreak for relaxation and exercise, while maintaining social distance. The new trail adds another resource for residents in Hillside and the surrounding area,” Zuber said.
The Union County community is encouraged to enjoy the outdoor spaces and parks, while abiding by COVID-19 safety regulations.
